Ask HR: Suspected theft by long-term employee.

Dear HR,

I have suspicions about a long-term employee stealing cash. Over the past couple of weeks I have ceded the till with additional money and only once had an overage reported.

How should I handle the termination?

Should I give the employee this information if I’m not interested in taking additional legal action?

askHRAnswer:

Often if you terminate without giving an explanation, employees may make up the reason on their own, which has its own ramifications.

Explain why you are terminating, including how you caught the employee:

  1. Removing money from the till
  2. Failure to follow procedures for till differences

Go into the meeting knowing that your decision is final – or if you are ready to give the employee one last chance – since they will likely deny the allegations.
